I heard and read good reviews about Caro Claire Burke’s debut novel, Yesteryear. It was Good Morning America’s April book pick, and I liked the cover, so I bought it on my Kindle. Yup. I sometimes read books by their covers. Lol
The protagonist, Natalie Heller Mills, is a modern-day social media influencer who seems to have the perfect life. She lives on a farm in their rustic house with her husband and 6 kids. They eat off their land. She smiles all the time. She has A LOT of followers.
One crazy day, she wakes up in her house. But it’s not exactly her house. And her kids aren’t exactly her kids. It’s 1855. Say what?!
Should you read it?….YES!
Some describe this book as satirical fiction laced with some psychological thriller aspects. I would concur. I was about halfway through and didn’t know where this book was going, and honestly got a tad frustrated. But I kept reading…
This book was quite different from many books I have read, and I ended up enjoying it. It was a very unique plot, to say the least!
If you’ve read some of my previous book reviews, you know I like watching YouTube videos with the authors about their book. I learned that Yesteryear is already in the works for a movie, and Anne Hathaway will play the lead role! Burke is already working on her sophomore book.
If you are unfamiliar with the term “trad-wife,” you will quickly learn the definition when reading this book. It’s the buzzword between the front and back cover. If you decide to read it, I hope you enjoy it!

Okay, I think I might actually like this one! The premise is so unusual, and the whole idea of someone presenting this picture-perfect life on social media and then suddenly waking up in 1855 really intrigues me. I feel like there could be a lot underneath that.
I also appreciate knowing that you got frustrated with it halfway through but were glad you stuck with it. That’s exactly the kind of thing I like knowing before I start a book because then I’m less likely to give up too soon. 😂
And yes, I have absolutely picked up a book because of its cover too!

When I worked for Scholastic, we had to do “Book Talks” all the time. I learned just to give a short synopsis and more of my opinion. I hope you like it when you decide to read it! It was a cool book! ..I like to be very honest because picking a book IS a committment!

I read and liked this! I thought the twist was a bit gimmicky, but I really did enjoy it. I thought it was a good satirical look at “influencer” society. The author has a podcast with another woman, called Diabolical Lies, which I enjoy from time to time.
