Lately, I’ve been thinking about 70s products. One day, while blow-drying my hair, I thought about all the shampoo brands I used. Many have, literally, washed down the drain, never to return to drugstore shelves.
Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific lived up to its name and was one of my favorites. Even back then, I thought the name was a mouthful. I remember the fuchsia-colored bottle. I mentioned in a post long ago that my memory of GYHST is of my best neighborhood friend Suzy and me, washing our hair in the showers after swimming at our local swim club. I could smell my hair all the way home on my bike as the wind dried it. It was the best! It seriously smelled terrific! lol Click here for a retro commercial!
I also used Flex shampoo frequently. I think Mom bought this brand often because it came in a large size, and our family had 5 kids. You could see the amber colored shampoo through the clear bottle with green lettering. I Googled Flex, and apparently it stood the test of time, and this shampoo is actually still available! Who knew? Maybe I’ll have to grab a bottle for old times’ sake!
I thought it was cool that a shampoo had beer in its ingredients, especially since alcohol was forbidden until you were 18 back in the day. Who remembers Body On Tap? The bottle was a unique shape. It reminded me of a genie’s bottle, wider at the bottom and tapering toward the top. You could choose from three kinds depending on your hair type, and each had its own color scheme. In general, Mom always bought the shampoo for “normal” hair, which had a green label. And yes, it DID smell a little like beer!
I remember using many different shampoo brands in the shower growing up. We used whatever was on the built-in shelves, even when the bottle was watered down because someone didn’t put the lid on. However, there seemed to be a common denominator. I liked good-smelling shampoo!
When we were toddlers, Mom probably washed our hair once a week. Once we got to middle school, I washed my hair every day, whether it was dirty or not. It was all about good-smelling hair.
I grew up with so many brands that I can’t mention them all. But a lot of them had their place in our shower at some point. So if you had Short and Sassy hair like me (remember that brand), you will Agree (another good one!) that clean-smelling hair was a priority!
Remembering Farrah Fawcett, who had the most beautiful hair in the 1970s…

I have thought of Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific SO MANY TIMES in my adulthood. I wish I had a bottle because I can’t remember what it smelled like, but I remember it!
When I was a teen it was all the rage to have Salon Selectives, that felt like “fancy” shampoo. And Aussie scrunch spray was a big thing for our big hair. This is, I’m thinking, 1988 and on. I remember feeling like the right shampoo would be the key to happiness!

Yes! They need to bring back Gee! It DID smell so good! You are the second one to mention Salon Selectives! I don’t remember that. Probably because it would be too extensive for use 4 girls to use. “The right shampoo would be the key to happiness!”..that line cracked me up! And it was true!
