Twenty-six letters. Those symbols we use every day that turned into masterpieces like the Declaration of Independence and Gone With the Wind. My love for words has been a passion since I was a little girl. Maybe it was the contentment I felt when I slipped into an exciting story sitting in a bright, warm classroom or the way those new grade school workbooks smelled as you flipped through the pages? Not sure, but perhaps that’s the reason I decided to jump on board and tell some stories. My short story content will be about growing up in my hometown of Canfield, Ohio, my thoughts, or possibly something interesting that happens in life. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I love writing them!
Golden Treasures
Oh, those beautiful golden spines with the sweet, black outlined pictures. “Little Golden books” bring back the best memories for me! Being the youngest of five kids, my mom took me everywhere. I was her little helper at the Five and Dime, my neighborhood bakery (my favorite!), and to the bank.
The errand I always looked forward to was the grocery store because, BEHOLD, they housed the beautiful, black spinning rack full of Little Golden books. There were so many to choose and she always let me pick out one, just for me! It was, no doubt, my mom that instilled the love of reading in me as I gripped the Golden Book in my sweaty, four-year-old hand. Like it was yesterday, I can see myself in the backseat of our green, wood-paneled station wagon, cracking that spine open and smelling the freshly printed pages. Since errand running happened, most likely, once a week, you can imagine, I had quite the collection by the time I got to nursery school.
I still have some of those books on my shelf but unfortunately, most are gone. My eyes still excitedly dart around when I land in the children’s section of a bookstore or a garage sale hoping to get my hands on another one of those sweet, golden treasures. If you’re feeling nostalgic, I fell upon this on-line store, Out of Print. I fell in love with all the “bookish” merchandise including the Little Golden books tote whose picture graces the top of this post. If you’re anxious about the world today, a book, old or newly published, maybe just be the remedy. It may calm your soul and take you to a faraway land or a place where you once found some peace as it does for me. Enjoy your read!

Love, happiness, health, peace, education, equality.
Oh, and maybe the right to have a pet in your life too just because they’re awesome.

I’ve always been an avid reader, too, Judy! And though my kids always had Little Golden Books, I never did! My mom subscribed ONE time to a book of the month club, and I got a new book every month for six straight. I read and re-read those books a hundred times…I still have two of them!! I never could understand folks who wouldn’t want to be transported to another place…somewhere bigger…better…more exciting! How they miss out!!
