I’ve always loved Halloween! From a little girl carefully choosing a costume to an adult carving a pumpkin every year, I’ll always celebrate October 31.
Watching Halloween-themed shows and movies is one of my traditions. The style of film I watch now has gone awry. I went from the silly TV special It’s the Great Pumpkin when I was young, to my favorite movie, the original Halloween…
I am the only woman I know who enjoys psychological thrillers, some supernatural/paranormal, and creature features. My husband doesn’t even like them. I watch them by myself all month long.
How can anyone not enjoy the 1931 vampire movie, Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi? The black-and-white film is iconic and hypnotic. The gothic set is unbelievably ominous and certainly sets the tone.
And don’t get me started on John Carpenter’s Halloween. Someday I will dedicate a whole post to this film. I have a love/hate relationship with this cult classic. It scares me to death every time I watch it. But I appreciate the famous piano score, the suspense over gore, and the fact that the film was shot in 20 days.
Another favorite I watch every year is Psycho. Alfred Hitchcock was a master of his craft. Let’s get right down to the shower scene…it was an incredible shot, so jarring yet showed no nudity or blood on Janet Leigh’s character, Marion. Actually, I learned it was chocolate syrup swirling down the shower drain. Genius.
Just because I have grown to appreciate and revel in this genre doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten the Halloween shows I remember as a kid.
Of course, our beloved Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin to arrive is a classic. It premiered in the US on October 27, 1966…two years before I was born! My favorite lines? “Can I have an extra piece of candy for my stupid brother?” and, of course, “ I got a rock”.
I also love watching The Brady Bunch episode Fright Night, season 4, episode 6. It’s the one when the kids pull spooky pranks on each other, and Alice boasts that she’s not easily scared. The siblings decide to test Alice by creating a haunted house in the Bradys’ home. It’s the perfect episode to watch during Halloween season! For a peek of that episode, click here!
Have you watched any Halloween episodes of the 2009 sitcom The Middle? It’s laugh-out-loud funny, and somehow relatable. I definitely recommend it if humor is your Halloween jam.
Whether you’re a fan of Edward and Bella from Twilight or Fred and Daphne from Scooby-Doo, grab some popcorn, turn off the lights, get under a cozy blanket, and take time to enjoy the Halloween season with some classic spooks. BOO!
Shout out to my sister-in-law, Pam, who is the biggest Peanuts fan I know! She has quite a collection of really cute Peanuts stuff!
