After I read my first book by author Taylor Jenkins Reid, Malibu Rising, I said it wouldn’t be my last. Just a few moments ago I finished reading the last 50 pages of her book, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Wow. Just wow. I’ve heard nothing but praises for this book and finally picked it up. Well, I’m another reader that will be echoing those same accolades.
The 385-page book is about fictional Hollywood legend and bombshell actress, Evelyn Hugo. Now in her late 70s she is ready to tell the story of her successful, yet scandalous ride to fame when her glamorous career began in the 1950s. After all, she did have seven husbands.
Monique Grant is a writer for a magazine in New York. She is bewildered when Evelyn contacts her to write her memoir and it’s an offer she can’t refuse. Writing a book about Evelyn Hugo would instantaneously boost her career. It’s certainly keeping her mind off her personal life as well.
There are so many reasons I was captivated by this book!
– It was exceptionally entertaining. It’s also the type of book that if you had to put it down for a day or two to get caught up on laundry, you could settle down quickly again without losing sight of the story.
-I appreciated the format of the book. It’s segmented into each of Evelyn’s seven husbands telling the tale of their relationships chronologically.
-Some of the content was unexpected which always makes a book very engaging.
-The character of Evelyn is very appealing. She is an on-screen superstar with a complex personality yet she yearns to experience the simple joys of life.
-After I put this book down and contemplated it, I found a profound message embedded in its content.
I highly encourage you to pick up this book! It’s the perfect beach, airport, or backyard read. At times you might be emotional, feel frustration, or question the integrity of a character but I can assure you that you’ll turn the pages with anticipation. You hit it out of the Hollywood ballpark, Taylor Jenkins Reid! It was fabulous!
