From September to December, many of us change our decor several times to accommodate the seasons of fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I get excited opening my storage boxes and seeing those special pieces I only use one time a year. However, it can feel overwhelming when you have several boxes in front of you filled with decor and thinking about where to place them. I have some easy tips to keep your holiday decorating fun, simple, and organized.
- Before you start shopping and decorating for a particular holiday, check your inventory. Since you only open your seasonal containers one time a year, it’s easy to forget the pieces you already have, especially if you bought a couple of new items the previous year. This is also a good time to purge items that you no longer use. Pack them up and donate them BEFORE you start decorating.
- Start with a clean slate. Having your mantel, bookshelf, and areas you like to decorate free of all decor and dusted makes the space more enjoyable when decorating begins. I usually do this the day before. I put my everyday decor items into a designated box then wipe down those areas. When you see those empty and sparkling spaces the next day you’ll be excited to get started adorning your space with your seasonal pieces!
- After the holiday, pack and LABEL your boxes with specific descriptions. For example, don’t just label a box, “Halloween Decor” but “Halloween Mantel”. That way you’re not hunting through a carton looking for a particular item. Last year I invested in some collapsable, see-through storage containers that made my decorating much easier and less stressful because I could see exactly what was contained in that box.
I find much joy when decorating for different seasons. Keeping your storage boxes neat, organized and giving yourself a timeline will make decorating something to look forward to when the calendar turns. Don’t forget to indulge in some seasonal music or a movie to really get you in the spirit while you pull out your yearly treasures. Have fun!
