Decorating and following home trends is one of my favorite pastimes. I enjoy adding new pieces from current fads as well as antiques into our home. For instance, we acquired chairs that we reupholstered from my husband’s grandparents dated from the 1950s and incorporated them into our home office. I paired them with a trendy farmhouse pillow and a textured throw blanket. For sure, I got the love of interior decorating trends from my mom.

Looking back, she had a keen sense of design. My childhood home certainly reflected all the eras we lived there.  In the 1960s I recall our retro-modern upholstered swivel barrel chairs and the colossal hi-fi stereo in our living room.  In the corner was a gold teardrop globe  lamp with a chain cord that fit next to a blue and green floral formal couch. Our living room was only used for special occasions, like entertaining friends for a fancy cocktail party, and was off-limits to rambunctious kids.

In the 1970s our wood-paneled family room was adorned by brown, orange, and tan shag carpet that, literally, had to be raked weekly to keep the nap nice and fluffy. A retro glass coffee table sat in the middle of the room with a couch and a rust color Laz-Z-Boy double recliner. It was far out.

Mom also went through the Williamsburg stage where flowered wallpaper was everywhere, as well as lots of Colonial blue color decor, dark mahogany furniture, brass candlesticks, and decorating with apples and oranges studded with cloves during the holidays.

Decor trends come and go, just like fashion. It’s fun to look back through old pictures and study the background to see what different style mom embraced at the time. She had a creative flair that I never appreciated until I started decorating my own house. Thanks, mom, for teaching me how to bring a sense of style, comfort, and pride to my home. You showed me to cherish all my collected treasures that help to create a space that I love for my family! As Dorothy said, “There’s no place like home.”
