May 27 is National Flip Flop Day! Time to break out the foot lotion and summer polish. It’s finally feeling like summer!
Growing up in the 70s, I either went barefoot, wore tennis shoes when riding my banana-seat bike, or wore flip-flops. I remember certain styles of flip-flops that were super cool to wear. Who remembers?…
–Dr. Scholl’s had to have been the most popular of all 70s flip-flops. My oldest sister, Laura, wore nothing BUT Dr. Scholl’s summer after summer. She had multiple pairs in different colors. I remember hearing her walk in them from a mile away. She sounded like a horse: clip, clop, clip, clop. I was a little young to wear them, but I tried them on when she wasn’t looking. They were so heavy and uncomfortable. She is 9 years older than me, so whatever she did or wore, it was very cool and hip!..lol Check out this commercial from 1977 here.
–The platform rainbow flip-flops were more my style! The thick soles had horizontal rainbow stripes. The nylon straps either featured one color from the soles or the same rainbow stripes. I had several pairs, and I loved them! Because they were rainbow, I felt I could wear them with any of my terrycloth short sets, and look good!..lol
-I remember the straw-bottom Japanese flip-flop trend. They were hard to walk in because the bottoms were super wide, oversized, and the material was always scratchy. The correct name for them is zori’s. The fabric you slipped your toes into was a solid color, round, puffy, and from what I remember, comfortable. I remember having a navy blue pair. I didn’t wear them often because I was afraid I would trip, but, of course, I had to have a pair because they were in style.
Flip-flops will always be popular during hot summer days. But no matter what shoes I wear or what is trending, they have to be comfy, or they’ll sit in my closet. Am I right? Happy Flip-Flop Day!
