If you’re in the market for a good mystery book during the creepy month of October, The Invited, by Jennifer McMahon, fits the bill. I’ve been reading different genres this past year and enjoying the change. For years I didn’t stray far from historical fiction. This title is chilling with an element of some historical fiction wrapped around it, satisfying both of my interests.

Nate and Helen left the comfy life in their community for an adventure, to build a house with their own hands in rural Vermont. They soon discover a mysterious and haunting history on the property in which they’re constructing their dream home. In 1924, legend says Hattie Breckenridge was put to death. It’s a story that involves three generations.

As progress is being made on the new house, Helen acquires a few antiques to add to the uniqueness of their home.  Then ominous things happen after the pieces are integrated into the framework. In the meantime, Nate has been spending too much time chasing after a white deer near a bog near their property. There are twists and turns and I even found myself thinking, “hmm..how is this all related?”. No spoilers. You’ll have to pick the book up to put the pieces together yourself.

At the library, I was searching for a mystery and the cover, actually, got my attention. A creepy house always captivates my imagination. Remember, I DO judge books by their cover! After reading some positive reviews, I took it home. I liked this book!

Some early parts of the story progressed a little slow for my taste but it didn’t deter me from continuing this 353-page book. I’m glad I did. I’m definitely finding mystery books entertaining! Of course, it’s fun reading a book like this during the 10th month of the year. Grab a cozy blanket and some Halloween candy you’re supposed to be putting aside for trick-or-treaters (I won’t tell!) and have yourself a good scare. Enjoy!
