I love celebrity book clubs! Titles usually climb straight to The New York Times Best Seller list soon after they’re picked because of the famous person’s influence. I revel in the hype surrounding these book clubs and the titles they choose.
I just finished reading The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave. It’s a Reese’s Book Club title from May 2021. There was a lot of favorable dialogue all over the internet about this book. It won several awards including Goodreads Mystery and Thriller of the Year for 2021!
The story takes place in California and Texas and the leading characters are Owen, his 16-year-old daughter Bailey, and his new wife Hannah. Owen and Hannah are trying to get Bailey, who despises her new step-mom, settled into their new family dynamics. Then Owen disappears just as a national news story breaks about the arrest of his boss.
There is a mysterious note left for Hannah and a US marshal, and federal agents start entering the picture. Hannah and Bailey are left trying to connect the dots while tracking down Owen.
I liked this book, but honestly, I didn’t love it. Please don’t let my opinion sway you from reading it. Consider all the prestigious awards it won and that 2 million people have read this book.
I admit I’m a difficult one to please when it comes to mysteries. I need an alarming and terrifying plot twist. I need an unpredictable, and petrifying story, the kind that has you hoping you locked your doors. The more daunting, the better. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays if that tells you anything.
There were many people I know that were fond of this book. For the reader that enjoys a mystery with a smidgen of intrigue, this book is a great choice! It just doesn’t have the spine-tingling terror that I prefer. It had lots of great reviews so those of you that don’t want something that keeps you up at night, read it! Enjoy!
