I was made aware of Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan’s book, Mad Honey from various sources in the social media world of books. I heard two things about this title. 1. It was good. 2. It deals with transgender issues. I got lucky and found a copy in great condition for $2 at a book sale so I thought I’d give it a whirl.

The story is about 18-year-old Asher Fields who is charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Lily Campanello. It is a novel filled with love, and suspense, exploring identity, betrayal, and abuse. It is an eye-opening portrayal of finding a person’s true path and inner peace.

Lily and Asher’s mom, Olivia, are the two narrators. Each protagonist leads separate chapters of the book. Lily tells her story leading up to her death and Olivia’s chapters are her thoughts and words after she died. This is the first time I read a book written in this form. As you navigate through the story, you will embrace the connection between these two characters. Perhaps that’s why the writers chose this particular configuration.

An interesting addition to the book is that Olivia is a beekeeper. I enjoyed how the information about her profession weaves into the story and as you read, you’ll learn how the book acquired its unique title.

Don’t be apprehensive about reading a book with a transgender character. Personally, it gave me emotional insight. Although the character is fictional, the writers give you a short walk in one of the main figures’ shoes, and I certainly felt empathy toward them.

I recommend you pick up the book Mad Honey. It’s a great story that touches on many emotions. Be open-minded and choose this book for its entertainment value and to expand your insight into different people living in our world. It was worth the 2 bucks. Enjoy!
