Happy Halloween! How lucky to be a young kid celebrating October 31 on a Friday this year! I love Halloween and tried to instill the fun aspects of the season in my kids. I succeeded. My 28 and 26-year-olds always think long and hard to come up with very creative costumes every year and go out and celebrate, most likely, at a bar.

As a big reader and a fan of all things fall, I bought many kids’ books as my kids were growing up that acknowledged the fall months. We would cuddle on the couch among the many Halloween decorations I put up, and read stories after their baths in their Halloween PJs. Of course, hot chocolate and marshmallows were involved.

As the picture above shows, I kept two of their favorite Halloween books, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything and Apples and Pumpkins. These books are well-loved, and I read them over and over again. Both are perfect for introducing not only the fall season, but also establishing that Halloween can be silly and fun.

And that included watching the Halloween episodes of their favorite shows. When they got a little older, I remember them being absorbed in The Fairly OddParents, Jimmy Neutron, and SpongeBob Halloween episodes. My favorite? There were a couple of fall and Halloween segments on Little Bear. The best!

Just out of curiosity, I asked my kids what their favorite Halloween memory was from their childhood. Jonathan, my oldest, was winning the 5th-grade costume contest. He dressed up like former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel. My youngest, Nic, loved carving pumpkins at a local park with their aunts, uncles, and cousins—two awesome memories.

I will always celebrate Halloween. There will always be pumpkins, a crow or two, and, of course, candy in our house. It makes life fun. It’s been years since our kids have been in town for Halloween, and even though it’s just the two of us, we will always carve a jack-o-lantern. This year, we’ll be creating our 34th pumpkin. I’m sure I’ll be posting it on Instagram, so be sure to check it out! Have an amazing Halloween weekend, my pretties!
