The Modern Farmhouse Frenzy
The feel of simple lines, muted colors, and a touch of rustic elements make it easy to enjoy modern farmhouse decor in your home. You don’t even need to pack up and move into a new house surrounded by rolling pastures and a white picket fence to enjoy the benefits! With each new decor trend that knocks on your door, you can easily add small touches that keep your home looking fresh without dishing out a lot of money or transforming every room of your house. Last fall we refreshed our home and it made a huge difference to its look and feel.
– Paint. New paint color can change the whole look and feel of your space. To incorporate the modern farmhouse look, simply think tones of gray or white. Walking into a paint store may be overwhelming with the shades of each color, so try taking only 3-4 swatches of your favorites. It’s much easier to pick from a few colors than lining up 20 on your wall and asking every family member for their opinion. No one is going to agree! Check your samples at different times of the day in the natural light of your room. That will make an impact on your choice.
–Think small. Just like fashion, you don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe to be in trend. Small changes, like switching a light fixture to a simple, black, boxy, one can make a huge difference in a space. Add some Edison bulbs and you now have a softer, warmer tone to your room. Swapping out pictures on your wall is another simple option to upgrade to the farmhouse look. Most local craft stores have lots of adorable choices and when you watch the sales, you can switch out prints inexpensively. It’s a room changer, for sure.
–Accessories. Natural textures such as metal, galvanized steel, or wood is a great choice when trying to achieve the farmhouse look. Another tip is to minimalize the number of accessories. In my experience, a few great pieces can showcase your whole room. Farmhouse decor certainly combines modern and vintage pieces. Think about taking a trip to a local thrift store to repurpose accessories. You can find great items for very little expense. While you’re browsing, remember a can of black, gray, or white spray paint can change the look of any treasure you may find!
When decorating any room, remember it’s your space. In my opinion, there aren’t any true decorating rules. If an accessory or color doesn’t make you feel happy, change it! Only surround yourself with things that make you feel joyful. With most of us spending more time at home this year, it makes sense to make your house comfortable and homey. Have fun and remember that a few, simple, and inexpensive changes can upgrade your space and keep it in trend.
