When you’re reading a book and have to stop to put laundry in the dryer or to start dinner, what do you use to keep your place? Maybe a scrap of paper or an old receipt? I have many bookmarks but admit I have used something other than a cute printed one to hold my place in a pinch. A piece of ripped paper and a recipe card to name a few.

I’m tactile. I prefer to hold a physical book in my hands so bookmarks are essential! I like to turn the pages and feel the paper in my hand. I like the sound of thumbing the pages when I read…yes, weird, I know! If there are many characters in the book I’m reading I like to underline their name in pencil so I can refer back. And bookmarks are part of that tangible appeal to me.

I was curious if any librarians have found weird placeholders as books are returned. Some are crazy! ..a $17,000 check, a pickle slice, an unopened pack of lemon juice, a bag of weed, a padded bra insert, and a used band-aid. Yikes. Google it. I laughed out loud.

I enjoy bookmarks because they are unique and personal, just as picking out a book can be. I love to get them as gifts, and give them as well! So, instead of using a ratty ole envelope from your electric bill, treat yourself to a low-cost bookmark. It’s cheaper than a pair of shoes and if you’re a book-lover, it will make you just as happy! As I say frequently, it’s the little things in life…

Here’s a couple of Etsy shops that I enjoy. I’m not affiliated with them, I just like them! Enjoy!
