Now that the sun is shining and summer is here, planting is in full swing. Last year I bought a darling antique table that I use to grow and display my herbs and small flowers. I love getting my hands dirty and seeing greenery and pretty color flowers on my patio.
If you’re looking for an extremely quick and fun project for whimsical and interesting planters, I have a craft for you to try. Basically, think outside the box. Lots of things can be used for planters and it’s fun to find vessels out of the ordinary to keep things looking fresh on your deck or patio this summer.
As you can see from my picture, I love going old school and using tin cans. You can use what’s in your pantry or next time you go grocery shopping, look for some cans with cool labels, especially if your store has a section for ethnic food. Also, next time you go antiquing you can find some really unique ones usually for a couple of bucks. To me, the older and rustic your container is, the better!
- First, make sure you open the can carefully so it doesn’t rip the label.
- Wash the can out thoroughly but try not to get the label wet.
- Punch some holes in the bottom of the can with a hammer and nails so if you’re using soil, it will drain properly.
- Spray it with a non-yellowing, clear coat, polyurethane spray, or use Mod Podge.
- Let it dry completely and start planting!
I enjoy using succulents planted in tin cans because they don’t need to be watered frequently and are slow-growing, so transplanting isn’t needed. Have fun creating your own unique planting space with several diverse pots, colors, and textures. Don’t forget those garden gloves if you’d rather not get your hands dirty!
