My Mom was the best Christmas stocking stuffer! Of course, she and my Dad, aka Santa, always treated us five siblings to many thoughtful and wonderful gifts. Let’s put it this way: in our family room on Dartmouth Ave, you could hardly see our orange-and-brown shag carpet because of all the presents Santa left us.
But we always relished our stockings and opened them first every year. They hung on our brick fireplace with care. From left to right were our white and red felt-like stockings, each with our names embroidered in cursive: Tim, Laura, Barbie, Shelly, and Judy.
Shelly’s stocking (she now goes by Michelle) is still burnt at the top. There was a mishap in our fireplace years ago when I was a baby. No one was hurt, and no major damage occurred. That’s a story for another post, but the charred stocking remains.
Not only did Mom fill our stockings with cool stuff, but we each had a pile on the hearth below. I recall receiving items such as different kinds of magic markers, sticker books, search-a-word puzzle books, Family Circus, and fiction books. (Santa knew I loved to read!) I also recall playing with play food — pieces of fruit, bread, and dishes — when we played house. When I was a teenager, I remember a Snoopy tote bag! Of course, in the stocking would be small packs of candy, gum, Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers, and Love’s Baby Soft perfume.
My siblings recall similar items. Some fun things they remembered were jewelry, little notebooks, pens, and Kiddles. Who remembers those? There was also Liddle Kiddle Kolgne in the plastic genie-bottle-looking containers, which had different scents. I actually remember them too!
My friends got completely different gifts in their stockings. Santa left them things like Life-Saver Christmas books, a pack of gum, candy bars, and, for some reason, I remember my sister and I’s best friends and neighbors always got a Big Jim Peppermint Stick. They were giant, and I was jealous that we didn’t get the huge stick in our stockings. They sure were neat!
After all these years, my siblings and I always agree that Mom had a knack for the best stocking stuffers. I know I passed that trait to my own kids and always got them creative little surprises that always seemed to be a hit. The coolest thing, though? Mom saved our original stockings and gave them to us before she died. I’m so thankful we have them, plus all the memories she filled them with year after year….

We had similar stockings! Honestly, stockings were my favorite part of gift opening! It sounds like we had very similar stocking experiences, which is why I love reading your blog so much.
When my kids were little, I decided to buy these HUGE stockings at the craft store. I told them that Santa brought them only their stocking gifts. It just made things easier because the girls are eight years apart. Well, it’s turned out to be their favorite part of Christmas! We individually wrap all of the stocking stuffers too. So much fun!

I realized I loved stockings the most because the small gifts were nothing that we asked Santa for. Everything was unexpected and my Mom loved buying that kind of stuff..kind of like the “fun junk” at the Scholastic Book Fairs..lol. I love that you started that tradition for your girls and that you wrap everything!!! Funny, my husband (who is 6 years older then me) and his younger siblings have the exact same stockings! Must have been the fad! Thank you for sharing a part of your Christmas with me!

YES! Unexpected gifts.
Did you ever have the Secret Santa’s that came to school? It was like a little pop-up that showed up in December. We could go inside of a little room and pick out a gift for our parents? Oh man, your post just triggered this memory!

Oh I certainly do! Our Secret Santa was a little different. Ours was called Elf Shelves, and way before the thought of Elf on a Shelf. Wait until next year. It’s on my “holiday blogs” I still need to write about!

I can’t wait to read it!

I loved those Life Saver books! I also loved when I’d get a Christmas themed activity book, the kind that would have puzzles and word searches in it. So much fun. This reminded me how much I’d love to get those comic “digests” like Archie!

Oh yes! I forgot about regular ole comic books that Mom got us too! Those activity books were awesome. especially if we got a fresh pack of crayons or colored pencils! Merry Christmas, Nicole!

My childhood stockings looked much like yours, with the rick-rack piping. Judy, what sweet memories. Your parents were so wonderful to you!!
I remember the lifesaver story book, lip gloss and candies too. Stockings were always first to be opened, and they still are! Now I tend to fill them with chocolates, lip gloss, beef jerky for the men, hand sanitizer (!!) and occasionally a magazine or word puzzle book. My MIL adds in all sorts of stuff for all of us; fuzzy socks, candies, candles, etc…generally, we can’t fit everything into the stockings.

The rick-rack! I’m finding out our stockings were pretty popular! Ohh..sounds like you give fun sticking stuff too! ..and you receive great things! The little surprises were always the best! (Sigh)..my parents were wonderful! I miss them, especially this time of year. Have a Merry Christmas!..especially the first one with the sweet little babe!
