Over the past couple of years, on my Thanksgiving post, I have enjoyed writing about random things I’m thankful for. Ya know, like getting a good parking space at a busy storefront or having all the ingredients for your recipe already in your pantry…
But what about back when I was growing up? What 5 random things would I have been thankful for as a grade-school kid? Thinking back, here is what I would probably have said…
- On the last day of class before break, the cafeteria offered a turkey lunch. It included turkey with the yellow gravy, mashed potatoes, those soft dinner rolls, and an ice cream cup. It didn’t matter how long the lunch line was on that day. It was the best!
- I had really nice teachers who didn’t assign homework during the long holiday weekend. However, I would have been okay with doing an artsy kind of homework.
- It was exciting if it snowed over Thanksgiving weekend! We were so happy to get outside and play for the first time that season!
- Sleeping in on Thanksgiving morning and waking up to Mom rustling around in the kitchen. The best is when the food smells start wafting up the stairs. It felt so cozy!
- Getting to drink pop at Thanksgiving dinner, eating snacks, and having more than one dessert..lol
Conjure up some good memories of your past Thanksgiving Days this holiday! Enjoy the weekend with your friends and family!

It’s been fun so far! Haven’t seen my kids in a while and they are here until Sunday! Did you celebrate in early October?

I love reading about your childhood memories because so many of them line up with mine, and you write them in such a lovely way. I’m pretty sure we had turkey and mashed potatoes with gravy on our school lunch menus too, but they never actually called it a Thanksgiving meal. Either way, our cafeterias had the best food. Whenever I say that now people look at me like I’m making it up, but I swear it was amazing.

Yup! It sounds like we have similar experiences. The Thanksgiving lunch was such a big thing! At one point in my career, post kids, I worked in our local middle school. Sometimes I bought lunch and it was still so good! They call grilled cheese “toasted cheese” and it’s always so melty and crispy!.lol

This was so sweet to read. I love your memories, and the fact that you can actually REMEMBER so many things. I’m impressed!! I do remember school lunches having fantastic warm rolls; I think they were yeast rolls? I can still taste them: Delicious!

Thank you so much for the compliment. It’s crazy how much I remember growing up! Then when I had kids, I remember nothing..lol. Our school lunches were so good! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend with your family and new grand babe!
