We have a new address! Moving out of our home of 24 years, from the house we built, and where our kids grew up, has been quite an adventure. It’s exciting, scary, emotional, and exhausting all at once. But we finally made it.
As I am writing this on Aug 13, it doesn’t quite feel like “home” yet. We moved into the new villa even though it wasn’t completely finished. We sold our house quickly back in April and had to vacate the premises by August 1. (Ok, I’m not acting like a big shot because I call it a villa. That’s what they’re called. It’s an HOA development that builds the same style of individual, smaller homes.) Contractors have been coming and going while we try to unpack. But the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter.
In June, we had a big garage sale. I took lots of stuff to Goodwill. I packed. I didn’t sleep. I packed. I slept. I cleaned. I wore the same outfit 3 days in a row because I didn’t care. We reminded ourselves that it was a temporary situation. I don’t think my back and knees will ever forgive me.
But, here we are, and it’s glorious! I see the potential and can easily picture the simple lifestyle we’ve anticipated since early 2024. I know, eventually, my weary back will thank me. The one thing I don’t miss already is having a two-story home.
Here are my favorite features of our new house I’d like to share…my walk-in pantry. It’s glorious and unbelievable how I ever lived without one..lol. And the rolling pins instead of regular ole’ door handles, I must say, are the cutest!
I’ve never had a bigger closet, and for the first time in my 57 years, I won’t have to pack up and store the clothes for the opposite season. I can’t wrap my head around it. Yahoo!
Although our roofed patio, right outside our kitchen, is not quite complete, I’m looking forward to relaxing by the fireplace in a comfy, cozy chair to read or watch TV. At our old house, I had to practically crawl down 2 flights of steps just to get to our patio set. I call our new place “the house of convenience”.
Once the finishing touches are complete, I’m positive it won’t take long to get cozy.
I know you’re all wondering how Theo, our 18 lb brown tabby, made the move from the only house he ever knew. He’s doing just fine! Skittish the first couple of days, but he’s been roaming around and checking things out. He was a major part of my anxiety during this move.
Thank you for being patient while I put my blog on hold! There was no way I would have enjoyed writing while worrying about whether I packed a box with the right amount of bubble wrap or how much I should sell some old planters for.
Cheers to house No. 71! I’m happy to be here!
PS. Since writing this, our new place has indeed started feeling like home! I know where things are in the kitchen drawers and have gotten into a routine. The outside of all the villas is virtually the same, including the light fixtures. I guess it made it easy that we didn’t have to choose anything. I did end up changing the doorbell to black because the white one didn’t match. The contractors still need fo finish a couple of things up, and I have to get a couple of things completed myself. I did buy a cream, bound rug for the family room. It looks and feels much cozier. Next on the agenda is finding a coffee table. It was hard and exhausting, but I would do it again in a minute!

I love that you’ve made this big transition and you’re now on the OTHER side of the chaos!! Love the rolling pin door handles; so very cute. I agree, one-floor living is the best, and making this sweet space your own is going to be so fun.
How funny that you stressed over the cat, and he’s doing so well. I mean, this.is.what.we.do.to.ourselves. Right? Constantly worrying about stuff that probably won’t even happen!
Congratulations all around to you both! (and Theo!)

I appreciate your kind sentiments! My grown kids, who live in Chicago, are happy too. They know we are safe in a 1 story and let go of a heck of a lot of stuff that they won’t have to deal with..lol. You are so right..needless worrying..a mom instinct even for a cat? Probably! PS I love the rolling pins too! Even though it’s a new house, I didn’t want it to be a “cookie-cutter” design.

GASP!!! It’s gorgeous! It’s absolutely beautiful! Ahhhh look at that! I love it so much.
We moved here in 2023 and, like you, the closet space and the walk-in pantry were just thrilling. Moving is a bitch and everything just feels chaotic and terrible for a while, and then suddenly…it doesn’t. Suddenly it feels like home. I’m so happy for you!

My goodness, you are so kind! Thank you so much. This will be our last big move! Agreed. It was very taxing on body and mind. ..and you’re right..all of a sudden the last box is unpacked and finally it’s all yours! A lot of friends asked why we were putting ourselves through another build (we built our previous house too) and I have to say, just like anything difficult, it’s only temporary. The final project is well worth a couple months of craziness. Thanks, again, for your gracious words.

Judy your new home is beautiful. I love it. I’m sure you’ll spend a lot of time on that awesome back porch even when it’s cold. Love the fireplace! We’re ready to do the same thing and simplify our lives. Enjoy it.

Ahh..thanks so much, Leslie! I appreciate it! We are enjoying the heck out of it already. We call it “the house of convenience”..lol Everything is accessible and it’s a space we will easily grow old in.

Your new home is so beautiful, and I’m truly so happy for you. That porch fireplace is so incredible—I can already imagine all the cozy moments you’ll have there. 💜

Thank you , my friend! Looking back, it was stressful but fun! In the back of our minds, we knew it would be temporary. I have spent more time on our new porch in the past 2 weeks then I did in a year in our old house. Loving it so much! (we just figured out where we’ll be putting the Christmas tree!)
Kari
I love hearing how quickly the new place feels like home. And deciding on the Christmas tree spot feels like the sweetest milestone. 🎄💜

…and I just bought a gorgeous set of garland for our new fireplace..Well..3 sets actually and returning the ones I didn’t care for..lol. Just thinking ahead…lol

I *love* your new home! It looks like my retirement dream home, too. Hmm, maybe we should move to Ohio?! Your kitchen is gorgeous and you had me at walk-in pantry. I’ve never had a pantry! And an outdoor fireplace and a huge bathroom?! Wow! I hear you on the closet space, too. In our 37-year old ranch home, we have standard size closets. So all our out-of-season clothes are packed in Tote bins in the basement. Always such a pain to have to dig them out and pack the other clothes away at the change of every season. Hope you’re having fun with the decorating!

I appreciate your kind words. It was a labor of love. When we started this project we pretended we were in our 80s. This is our last house and wanted all the bells and whistles so we can grow older in a safe and convenient environment. I don’t think our kids will ever live in our hometown again. It’s fine. They are living their best lives! They are happy and content we’re in a safe home and got rid of most of our stuff. I will miss the planning part of it. It was too much fun!
