As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” …or in my case, herbs. I’m better at growing herbs than flowers.
Growing herbs is gratifying because you don’t have to be as attentive to them as flowers. Plus, you get to use the fruits of your labor! I cook what I grow, making it a fulfilling summer and fall hobby.
Several years ago, my husband decided to pull my herbs from their pots and plant them in the ground at the end of summer. Why not? I had nothing to lose. The plants caught on, and now I have an herb garden in my backyard that produces oregano, thyme, rosemary, camomile, lavender, and sage annually. I also buy herbs to grow in pots like basil, catnip (for Theo!), and parsley.
Here are some things I do with my herbs…
-Cut them and put them in vases instead of flowers. They’ll make your kitchen smell so good!
-I dry and bottle them for cooking. I gather a bunch with twine and hang them to dry. Plus, they look cute! I often use my oven to dry herbs quickly. Just put them on a sheet pan in a 125-degree oven for about 20 minutes or until they’re dry enough to crumble and store in jars.
-We make lots of pesto with our basil! It’s fabulous.
-I use herbs in drinks to make them look fancy!
-Give them as little gifts. You can make lavender sachets, infused oil, or just put some in a decorative bag so your friends can use them fresh in their next meal.
If you’ve never grown herbs, you should! Buy one or two different ones and experiment. Smell them. Check the tag for the best place to grow them. Experiment with them. For only a couple of bucks, get into the dirt and enjoy the simple things in life!

My mom and my friend Rebecca have always had some kind of herb garden, and whenever they use them in drinks or dishes, I always kick myself for not doing it too! I love the idea of cutting them for a vase—I’m totally going to do that. I always think I don’t love herbs enough to grow them, but I’d absolutely enjoy having some just to keep in a vase!

Oh, I’m glad you like that tip! I’m probably one of the few women that don’t appreciate fresh-cut flowers.
They die so quick. So, I like to cut stuff out of my herb garden..lol. Enjoy the smell of them! That’s what I love about them the most.

I agree with this. I prefer a plant over flowers.

Such great tips! I love growing herbs although this year I only have cilantro and basil. Oh wait, I also have lavender, I never think of it though as it’s in the flower garden and I don’t cut it. Maybe I should! Last year I grew way too much parsley. I dried a lot but it’s still insane how much I have – and I don’t even use it that often!

I gotta admit, I’m pretty obsessed with herbs! I have many dried herbs in jars and they last much longer then the ones in the grocery store. We are moving this summer so I didn’t buy any this year and obviously leaving my garden behind to the new owners. I think because I’m skipping a year, I will appreciate them the more next summer. Thanks for your comment! I always enjoy them!

I have a small herb garden in the back of my house where I’m growing rosemary, thyme, oregano, chives and red sorrel. I have dill and parsley in pots. I still need to buy a couple of basil plants and get those going in pots, too.
I just made tuna salad and used the dill, parsely and chives from my garden! Love going outside and snipping fresh herbs to use in dishes I’m making.

What a nice variety of herbs! They are so fun to grow. I use mine often too. I’ll have to switch to all pots when we move in our new house. Hope you have a good crop this year!

I love growing herbs and I seem to have the best luck with basil, but cilantro? Not so much, which is horrid because I LOVE cilantro. How sweet that yours produce year round. I’ve never thought to use them as cuttings, but boy oh boy, does that make sense?!

I’m more of an herb person rather than flowers. When you grow them in the ground, you can use them all year. We picked fresh thyme for our Thanksgiving stuffing this year even with a little dusting of snow on it!..lol
